Communication Tips for Real Estate Admin

Try these easy communication tips for real estate admin and watch your career soar.
Talk one-on-one
Expressing your ideas in a room full of people can be a challenge – especially if you’re not used to holding the floor with a large group. Instead of waiting for team meetings to raise issues or offer your opinion, request a one-on-one meeting with your agent or another decision maker on your team. By chiseling out time for communication, you ensure that there are no outside distractions to pull focus from the message that you’re trying to convey.
Boundaries, Who Needs ‘Em?
Did you know that boundary setting is an effective form of communication, and that it can be a kind, productive type of problem-solving for a real estate admin? It’s true!
Imagine that your agent has asked you to take on a handful of duties that are outside the scope of your role. You’re already exhausted, and the additional work is pushing you to the brink. If you embrace the new tasks without pushback, one of two things can happen:
- You try your best to do your job, but you’re exhausted. You start making mistakes and wind up performing far worse than you would have if you’d expressed your inability to take on more work to your agent. Eventually, your agent determines that you are unfit to continue your role.
- You take on the extra workload and still perform well at your job, but your personal life suffers as you are forced to work longer hours. Your relationships with your friends, partner, or family become strained, and you feel as though your life revolves around your career.
In this case, setting a boundary is preferable to personal sacrifice. By keeping your agent informed of your workload, as well as the challenges and frustrations you face, you give yourself the ability to clearly express what it is you need to thrive in your role.
Don’t Get Personal
After a while, it’s likely that you’ll begin to develop a sense of rapport and become more comfortable with your coworkers. At some point, you might even feel compelled to share details of your life or talk about your personal problems.
Keep in mind, however, that even if you become friendly with the rest of the real estate team, you’re still in an office setting. As a real estate admin, you want to maintain a professional sense of authority in your role. Limit the time you can meet with agents or other team members with time blocking or scheduling. Avoid oversharing, complaining, or gossiping with your coworkers – even if it seems to be a common workplace activity. In the long run, you’ll be grateful to have a clear conscience and a private personal life.
